Mustangs down Sheridan Friday night; WWCC faces Northwest on Saturday with Region IX North lead on the line

SHERIDAN – The Western Wyoming Volleyball squad did its part on Friday to set up a Saturday battle for the Region IX North Conference lead with Northwest. The Mustangs spiked Sheridan in straight sets Friday night.

The first set was a close one for the Mustangs but they were able to pull it out in the end, 25-23. Western controlled the second set better as they took a two set lead with a 25-18 win. In the third, Sheridan did everything they could to extend the match but WWCC was able to get the crucial points down the stretch to take a 27-25 win.

The win moved the Mustangs to 21-8 on the season including 9-1 in Region IX North play.

Cassidee Lish led the Mustangs on Friday night with 15 kills while Lauryn Dela Cruz smashed 13 kills. Alexa Goulding was tops on the team in assists with 20 while Amber Hillestad followed right behind with 17 assists. Hillestad also had two ace serves on the night.

Cruz was not only strong on offense, she also sparked the team defensively. Cruz led the team in digs with 15 while Ashley hill has 12. Taeja Davis was tops on the team in blocks with four while Cruz and Kortney Freeland each added three blocks.

The conference lead is on the line as Western faces Northwest College in Powell on Saturday. Game time is at 3 p.m.
