CHEYENNE – If you’ve got your sights set on hunting this fall and still need to complete your hunter education requirements, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department advises that now is a good time to sign up for a hunter safety class.

Hunter education is required in Wyoming for all hunters born after 1965. The major purpose of hunter education is the prevention of hunting and firearm related accidents, but emphasis is also placed on improving knowledge about the heritage of hunting and developing a sense of ethics and responsibility.

Game and Fish says that spring is a good time to get into a hunter safety class as space is often available and prospective hunters do not need to worry about finding a class at the last minute before fall hunting seasons. A common complaint from those who wait until the last minute is that classes fill up quickly and not as many classes are available.

Hunter education is taught by volunteer instructors who, just like their students, want to put down the books and pick up a firearm in the fall to go hunting. Although there will be classes in the fall, the best time to take a hunter education class is really January through August.

To register for a class, visit the Game and Fish website at wgfd.wyo.gov and click on Education, then Hunter Education Course Schedule. Prospective students are encouraged to continue checking the website to see when new classes are being offered.
