Tigers Have Strong Finishes During First Day of State Championships

GILLETTE – Tigers Swimmers had a solid first day at the 2017 4A State Swimming Championships as several will go after state titles on Friday.

The top six in each event will swim for titles and the Tigers had several who finished in the top six. Leading the way on Thursday was Darwin Anderson. He finished first in the 200 free and first in the 500 free. Anderson was two seconds ahead of the field in the 200 free and over eight seconds in front of the field in the 500.

Joining Anderson in the finals in the 500 are Ron DeFauw and Parker Newberg. DeFauw finished in third with Newberg right behind in fourth. DeFauw will also go for a title in the 100 back finishing fifth on Thursday. Joining Anderson in the 200 free finals is Bryan Monzon. He finished in the fifth spot with a time of 1:50.76.

James Spicer is the final Tiger who will chase a title in the swimming events. Spicer finished in the sixth spot in the 100 fly. The lone diver for Rock Springs, Johnathon Even, battled through the prelims and semifinals to earn a spot in Friday’s finals. He currently sits in tenth.

Several other Tigers finished in the top 12 and will swim in the B-finals on Friday.They include Newberg who finished seventh in the 200 IM, Spicer who finished eighth in the 100 back and Kade Thomas who finished 12th in the 100 breast.

Just missing the top 12 and will be ready if someone is unable to race on Friday is Thomas who finished 13th in the 200 IM and Monzon who finished 13th in the 100 free.

Several relay teams will also go for titles on Friday.
