Welcome to a new SweetwaterNOW series, #WHYoming.
We are highlighting people from around our communities and asking them a few questions. We want to learn a little about them and see why they chose this great state to raise their families, start their businesses, or simply to ask — Why Wyoming?
This week I sat down with Vickie Liptak. Vickie avidly attends the Iron Cowboy CrossFit gym in Rock Springs at age 60 to stay healthy. Despite having five operations this past year, she keeps returning to the gym.
Vickie, tell us one thing that is unique about you?
I absolutely love my life. There is nothing I can think of that I would change right now. I am totally independent. I can get up in the morning by myself. I can drive. I’m healthy and I love that.
What is one of your favorite things to do in Wyoming?
Golf. I golf in Green River and have been golfing for about 15 years.
If you could give one brief piece of advice, what would it be?
Take care of your body. You only get one. I look at a lot of people my age who can’t do certain things or say they can’t because this hurts or that hurts, but all you have to do is get moving and stay moving. If you move, things will change. If you sit on the sofa eating bonbons and watching soap operas, nothing is going to change.
What is one thing you appreciate about our community?
The generosity and the love. You see it every day. You might be in the grocery store and someone will let you go ahead of them for no reason at all. You don’t get that in a big city. Also, people don’t hold things against you and they embrace you no matter what.
Would you rather walk, ride a bike, take a horse, or drive a car?
Walk, if I could. If it is 10 miles away, I would do something else.
What would you sing at karaoke night?
“Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding.
How would your friends describe you?
Who would you want to play you in a movie about your life?
Angela Bassett. I love her shoulders.
Take care of your body. You only get one.
– Vickie Liptak
What is your proudest accomplishment?
Other than my family and my kids, the fact that I ranked 126th in the world at CrossFit in my age division. I intend to get better.
To become ranked, you are given a different workout each week for six weeks starting in February. Then you are ranked according to your scores as part of the CrossFit Open. If you are in the top 150, you get four more workouts. The top 50 of those 150 go to the CrossFit Games.
Why do you continue to live in Wyoming?
Wyoming has four seasons and we have the best summers in the world, hands down. In the winter, there might not be as many things to do outside, but inside there are so many things you can do here to stay busy. And, all my friends are here and I love being involved in the community.
