Wolves Seeing Doubles Finishing 4A South Region in Second

GREEN RIVER – While all competitors have already punched their tickets to state, important momentum and last minute adjustments – as well as seeding – was up for grabs at the Regional Tennis Tournament in Green River.

It would come right down to the end but the Laramie Plainsmen would be the team holding the South Regional title beating the Green River Wolves by one point, 45-44.

All three Wolves doubles teams would end up bringing all three doubles titles homes.

The Rock Springs Tigers would finish fourth with a score of 36 points. This was four points behind the third-place finishing team from Torrington.

Individual Results and Early State Look

No. 1 Singles

In the opening round of the Regional Tournament, Tiger Tony Lew faced East’s Joe Froelicher. Froelicher took the first set 6-1 but Lew fought back forcing a third set with a close 7-5 win in set two. Froelicher was able to swing the momentum back in set three taking down Lew 6-3.

Lew rallied from the opening round loss in the consolation bracket. Lew dominated Rawlins’ Austin Tarango in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-0. In the next round, Central’s Chase Anderson was able to take control earlier as he eliminated Lew, 6-3 and 6-0. Anderson would  go on to take the consolation title.

Anderson also played a role in Green River’s first-round action. Anderson beat Wolves Jacob Lock in a tight match to open up the first round, 6-4, 7-6.

Lock would come back strong winning in the first round of the consolation bracket and rallied from a set down to beat East’s Froelicher, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6. The win gave Lock another shot at Anderson but it was again Anderson with the win, 6-2, 6-4.

Green Rivers Jacob Lock will meet Matt Paris of Kelly Walsh.  Paris went 1-2 in the North Regional Tournament.

Rock Springs Tiger Tony Lew will face Quinton Suska of Sheridan. Suska lost in the North Consolation Finals.

 

Singles No 2

For Rock Springs Kelby Kramer earned a spot in the semi-finals with a three set win over East’s Javaun Garcia, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. Central’s Mark Menghini jumped up early on Kramer and took the match, 6-2, 6-1. Menghini would end up winning the regional title.

Kramer would battle back earning a spot in the consolation finals with a straight sets win. Torrington’s Ethan Creagar would take the finals with a win, 6-4 6-2.

Green River’s Andrew Halverson suffered losses in both regional matches.

 

State Matchup

Green River Wolves Halverson will open with North Region Champion Aaron Swan of Gillette.

Kramer will open with Joel Montoya of Kelly Walsh. Montoya finished the North Region Tournament 1-2 which included a loss to eventual champion Swan to open play. In the consolation bracket he would eventually lose to the consolation winner.

 

Doubles No. 1

At the regional tournament it was all the Green River team of McCaden Mikesell and Ian Ebert. The would battle into the finals where they would control the team from Laramie with a 6-2, 6-4 win and the South Regional Championship.

The Rock Springs team of Tucker Leibee and Hunter Davidson would respond from an opening round loss to take the Consolation Title. They would take wins over teams from South, Central and Torrington to win the title.

The top team from the South, Green River’s Mikesell and Ebert will open with Kruse and Kaufmann, of Kelly Walsh.

Leibee and Davidson will face the Cody team of Sankey and Luedde who finished 1-2 in the North Tournament.

 

Doubles No. 2

Another team from Green River would be standing on the podium at the end. A team which knows a little bit about each other, Patrick and Gregory Marchal, stormed through the bracket to take the top honor. The Marchals did not lose a game until the semi-finals.

On the other side, the Rock Springs Team of Nathan Baldwin and Jake Rawson were also making noise. The used straight sets wins in both the first round and semi-finals to earn their spot in the finals.

The Marchals would take the first set 6-3 but Baldwin and Rawson would answer taking set two, 6-4. The Green River team would use an important break in the third and final set to take the South Region Title, 6-4.

 

State Matchups

The Marchals will open the 2015 State Tournament with a bye as they will wait to face the winner of the Powell and Laramie match.

Baldwin and Rawson will open their state run against Terry and Brown from Sheridan. Terry and Brown went 0-2 in the North Region Tournament.

 

 

No. 3 Doubles

Evan Carollo and Cody Lee would make it a sweep for the Wolves doubles teams. Two straight-sets wins by the team would have them sitting in the title game.

On the other side, the Tiger team of Deklyn Searle and John Prevedel was challenged in the first round but overcame to take a three-set win over the team from Torrington, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. They followed it with a straight-sets win over Laramie to punch their ticket to the finals.

In was all Carollo and Lee in the finals. They took the first set 6-2 and followed it with a 6-1 win in the second to earn the regional crown.

Carollo and Lee will enjoy a first-round bye to open the 2015 State Tournament. They will face the winner of Central and Kelly Walsh in round two.

Searle and Prevedel will face the Natrona team of Barnes/Busch who lost both matches in the North Tournament.
