WWCC Wrestling Returns Home for Monday Dual Against Colby

ROCK SPRINGS – After seeing success at the Northwest Open this weekend, the Western Wyoming Community College Mustang wrestlers return to Rushmore Floor Monday night against Colby College. The dual begins at 7 p.m.

At the Northwest Open, the Mustangs had 11 wrestlers finish with fourth place or higher. Matt Hebel led the way with a first-place finish. Ryan Winger, Aspen Naylor and Shane French all battled to second-place finishes in Powell.

“The Northwest Open was good for us at this point in our season,” WWCC Head Coach Art Castillo said. “November is a grinder, typically. Although we needed the mat time, it was good to not get a bunch of matches. It was a very small tournament in terms of numbers and we did see some success.”

Cole Verner sat out at the Northwest Open as a precaution after suffering a wrist injury early in the season. Castillo said Verner will be ready to go Monday against Colby.

With the Northwest Open in the rear-view mirror, the Mustangs now focus on Colby College. Colby comes into Monday night’s dual ranked 20th in the nation.

“Colby comes to town ranked No. 20 nationally and we need to be ready,” Castillo continued. “They are an NJCAA perennial power year after year.  They are well coached and have some real talent.  Having a 48-hour weigh-in essentially, is something that is also new to our guys so we will see how they handle that Monday night. I am hopeful that the nerves won’t be there like they were against Northwest and we can open up and perform well.

The Mustangs had a short workout Sunday in preparation for Colby.

“We had an afternoon workout Sunday and we talked about a few things in preparation for Monday night’s dual. We are very young, as talented as we are, we are very young. Eight of 10 starters are freshman so we are going to make mistakes. Knowing that, we have to be open to taking risks and embrace the process. We are essentially three weeks into our careers for most our guys and we are still learning. We aren’t losing matches because we are outclassed, that is certain, We just need more match experience and that will come.”

This is the second home dual of the year for the Mustangs and coach is looking forward to another large turnout.

“I am also hopeful that our Sweetwater County fans will be out in support like they were in our opener- that was awesome,” Castillo said.
