ROCK SPRINGS — The 2026 season at Sweetwater Speedway will come down to its final two nights this weekend as The Championship Chase takes over the track Friday and Saturday, Aug. 28-29.
The two-day event will serve as the final racing weekend of the season at the local track, with championships hanging in the balance in the IMCA Sport Compact, IMCA Sport Mod, IMCA Hobby Stock and IMCA Modified divisions.
Racing is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. both nights, with heat races followed by B mains and feature events. The features are scheduled for 20 laps in the Sport Mod, Sport Compact and Hobby Stock divisions, while the Modified feature will run 25 laps. Late Models are also scheduled to compete.
The championship battles enter the weekend with several drivers still within striking distance of the leaders.
In the IMCA Sport Compact division, Cody Poll of Green River enters the final weekend atop the standings with 309 points. Rock Springs’ Travis Bott sits second with 304, just five points behind. Ethan Poll of Green River is third with 276 points, followed by Green River driver Kaleb Clark with 261 and Rock Springs’ Marc Hammond with 259.
The IMCA Sport Mod standings are similarly tight at the top. Rock Springs’ Slade Pitt leads with 293 points, with Rock Springs’ David Pitt at second with 285. Green River’s top racer in the Sport Mod is Josh Pate with 281 points at third. Two Renfros from Cheyenne round out the top five with JD Renfro in fourth with 276, while Jimmy Renfro has 246 for fifth.
Only 12 points separate the top three in the Sport Mod standings, making the division one of the closest championship races heading into The Championship Chase.
The IMCA Modified division features another Green River battle at the top. Braxton Yeager leads with 289 points, while his younger brother Bryson Yeager is second with 282. Their father, Justen Yeager, sits fourth with 270, giving the Yeager family three of the top four positions entering the final weekend.
Travis Metz is in between the Yeager family at third with 271 points, just one point ahead of Justen. Rounding out the top five is Idaho Falls racer Terrell Payne, who has 267 points.
Braxton Yeager holds a 7-point advantage over Bryson Yeager, but the fight for the remaining positions is considerably tighter, with just 15 points separating second through fifth.
In the IMCA Hobby Stock division, Fairview, Utah’s Jeramy Johnson enters as the points leader with 304. Herriman’s Preslie Thorne is second with 286, while Rock Springs’ Danica Delp is third with 268.
With the season reaching its final checkered flags, drivers will have one last opportunity to turn strong qualifying and feature performances into valuable championship points.
The Championship Chase will begin Friday with heat races for the IMCA Sport Mods, Hobby Stocks, Sport Compacts, Modifieds and Late Models. B mains are scheduled for 12 laps, followed by the feature races.
The same schedule will continue Saturday, bringing the 2026 Sweetwater Speedway season to its conclusion.
For drivers battling for championships, there will be no next weekend to make up ground. The final two nights at Sweetwater Speedway will decide who leaves the track as the 2026 points champions.
