Charles David Mahoney, 83, passed away on Thursday, December 31, 2020, peacefully at his home in Sterling, Kansas. He was born March 31, 1937, in Sterling Kansas to Logan and Josephine Mahoney.
Chuck grew up in Sterling and graduated from Sterling High School in 1955 and attended Sterling College and Ft Hays State College.
In 1958, he left Sterling and moved to Big Piney and went to work in the oilfield for Belco Petroleum (EOG) where he met Jo Ann Miller from Mountain View and in 1959, they married. Kimberlee was born in 1960 and Michael was born in 1962.
He loved his family very much and they spent every weekend either camping, boating, fishing, hunting or taking snow machine trips through West Yellowstone. Chuck always attended his children’s sports activities and music concerts and was always working on their vehicles during their college years when they broke down.
He loved Christmas when his mother would send a huge box of homemade candy, cookies, bourbon balls and fudge from Kansas. Around Christmastime everyone wanted to know if that box of goodies had come yet and to let them know when it arrived. He always took some to his co-workers.
Anyone who knew Chuck knew that he had quite an imagination and was very innovative. The dinner forks made an excellent weapon to catch bullheads for fish bait, however, made it difficult when it came time to eat and there were no forks. And, all of those fish stories… Chuck was very dedicated to his job and retired from EOG after 30+ years of service. He moved to Oklahoma where he raised catfish in his pond and eventually moved back to Sterling, Kansas.
While in Kansas, he shared his life with Janet Peterson and he started making his “famous sand hill plum jelly.” Chuck loved to cook and do woodworking up to the time of his death. He was kind and generous and will be missed by all.
Chuck was preceded in death by his father Logan Mahoney and mother Josephine Mahoney, stepmom Ann Mahoney, father and mother-in-law Galen (Eunice Miller), Janet Peterson.
He is survived by his children Kimberlee Hering (Paul) of Wyoming and Michael (Beverly) Mahoney of Texas. Grandchildren, Sharlee (Amey) More, Amanda (Ross) DeBoom and Matthew (Lauren) Mahoney. Great Grandchildren Holland and Sebastian DeBoom, Sister Barbara (Daryl) Robe, Sister-in-law Dianne Davison (Ron) and Brother-in-law Don Miller (Vicki). Many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Nieces, Nephews and Grand-dogs.
One last drive was taken around Sterling Lake before a graveside service was held on January 9, 2021, at Sterling Cemetery followed by a get-together at Crosspoint Church.
