Cowgirls Close Out MW Championship; Woodard was the Cowgirls highest finisher tying for 14th

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – University of Wyoming Cowgirl sophomore Emily Woodard finished tied for 14th on the final day of the Mountain West Championship on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Woodard is the Cowgirls’ highest finisher in the event since Juanita Rico placed 11th at the 2012 MW Championship. The Cowgirls recorded a score of 326 (+38) in Saturday’s final round finishing in ninth-place in the nine-team field carding a three-round total 953 (+89).

 “We made strides on a very difficult championship course” UW head coach Josey Stender said. “Today was a difficult day for all teams as the temperature and wind played a major factor.”

 Woodard turned in a final round tally of 78 (+6) on Saturday. During the final round of play she ranked as high as 11th in the 45-golfer field. Her place was a career-best, as she finished the championship at 228 (+12). Woodard was second in the championship in birdies with nine. Senior Stacey Blunt finished in 31st at 238 (+22) after turning in a final round score of 85 (+13).

 “It was great to see Emily step up these last couple of tournaments and our future is very bright,” Stender said.

 Senior Emily Wood scored a three-round total of 246 tying for 41st place after recording an 83 (+11) in the final round. Junior Samantha Stancato turned in a score of 81 (+9) to finish the championship at 247 (+31), as she ended action in 43rd place. Freshman Mackenzie Barrie wrapped up play in 44th place at 255 (+39) after carding an 84 (+12) on Saturday.

 New Mexico earned the team title edging out San Jose State by one stroke at 902 (+38). San Diego State, Fresno State and UNLV each tied for third-place with tallies of 909 (+45). Fresno State’s Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir earned medalist honors at 218 (+2).

 Blunt and Wood played in their final event as Cowgirls on Saturday.
