COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Mountain West announced Tuesday that it had named Cowgirl sophomore Jerayah Davis its Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week after the sprinter set a War Memorial Fieldhouse record to win the women’s 55-meter dash on Friday at the Power Meet. Davis’ time of 6.73 seconds converts to 7.25 seconds for the 60-meter dash, crushing the previous program record.
Davis’ school record time of 7.25 for the 60-meter dash breaks the former mark of 7.30 set by Kima Wells in 2004. With an altitude conversion, Davis’ adjusted time of 7.29 currently leads the Mountain West by two tenths of a second and ranks second in the NCAA behind only Kentucky senior Javianne Oliver.
Davis showed her incredible versatility by taking second place in the long jump behind teammate Ja’la Henderson at the Power Meet. Davis’ personal best mark of 19 feet, 6 inches vaulted her into third place in Wyoming history for the event. She trails only Henderson in the conference rankings for the event, and her mark is tied for eighth-best in the NCAA this season.
The weekly conference honor is the first of Davis’ career and the first for the Cowgirls since Audra DeStefano was named the MW Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week on April 12, 2016. Emelda Malm-Annan was the most recent Cowgirl to take home a weekly honor from the conference for an indoor performance, winning the award on Dec. 15, 2015 after an impressive showing at last season’s Power Meet.
Wyoming track & field next competes at the Potts Invite in Boulder, Colo., on Jan. 13-14. Stay tuned to GoWyo.com and @wyo_track on Twitter for additional updates.
