ROCK SPRINGS — Residents and first responders will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks Friday morning.
The sixth annual 9/11 Memorial Walk starts 5:30-5:45 a.m. at the Western Wyoming College parking lot with participants gathering prior to the walk. At 6 a.m. participants will walk to the Grant Street Extension. First responders will complete six round trips up and down the hill, a distance representing the approximately 2,071 steps and 110 floors of the World Trade Center towers. Many of the first responders will complete the walk wearing their full-duty gear as a symbolic gesture of what emergency responders carried into the twin towers. Residents are welcome to complete the walkas well.
“We do this to remember the first responders who climbed those stairs that morning knowing people needed their help,” Sheriff’s Office Event Coordinator Deputy Jeff Sheaman said. “Twenty-five years later, it’s important that we continue to honor their sacrifice and make sure what happened that day is never forgotten. It’s also an opportunity for our community to come together, build camaraderie, and honor all the lives lost.”
Local agencies will provide traffic control along the route to help ensure participants’ safety.
