Foster Reaches Final Of Open Championships; UW volunteer assistant wins five matches over the weekend

LAS VEGAS  – For the second-straight year, University of Wyoming wrestling volunteer assistant coach Clayton Foster wrestled in the final of the ASICS Las Vegas/Open Wrestling Championship. On Saturday night, Foster finished as the runner-up in the 86-kilogram (185 pounds) weight class of the senior men’s freestyle portion of the event.

In the final bout, Foster lost a tight 7-4 decision to Keith Gavin of Titan Mercury Wrestling Club. Foster posted a 4-0 lead after the first period, but couldn’t find any more offense the rest of the way. With his finish, he secured a spot in the U.S. World Team Trials, which take place May 30-June 1 in Madison, Wis.

Foster made it to the big stage with five victories Friday, including three technical falls and one pin. In the semifinals, he was down 5-0 to Ed Ruth (Nittany Lion Wrestling Club), only to storm back with eight unanswered to lead 8-5 after the first period. Ruth came back to lead 12-10 with just seconds remaining, but Foster finished a late takedown and was awarded the points to win 13-12.
