CLOVIS, Calif. – Wyoming had four student-athletes score points late Thursday night at the 2016 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Senior Kyle Sullivan and junior Caleb Seeton concluded the decathlon in fourth and seventh, respectively, while senior Aaron Derner and junior Megan Brunette placed sixth and fifth in the 10,000 meters.
Sullivan tallied 6,943 points, just six points shy of his personal best, to move up one place in the final standings after Thursday’s final five events. The Powell, Wyo., native opened with a 14.84 in the 110-meter hurdles, before throwing the discus 114-4. He cleared a personal-best 13-9 1/4 in the pole vault, threw 154-11 in the javelin and wrapped up the event with at 4:44.12 in the 1,500 meters. Sullivan had just one personal best in the 10 events of the decathlon, but was solid across the board.
Seeton’s finish came by way of a personal-best 6,390 points, as he bettered his previous mark by over 1,000 points. He ran 15.11 in the 110-meter hurdles, threw the discus a personal-best 107-3 and cleared 11-9 3/4 in the pole vault. He wrapped up the event with a throw of 135-6 in the javelin and ran 5:16 in the 1,500 meters.
Sophomore Clare Nicolas finished 16th in the heptathlon, but tallied a personal-best 4,277 points for ninth in Cowgirl history in the event. During Thursday’s final three events she notched a mark of 17-2 1/4 in the long jump, 88-0 in the javelin and 2:36 in the 800 meters.
The 10,000 meters was the only other event contested on Thursday. Derner ran with the lead pack the majority of the 25-lap race and made a move to the front with two laps left, but fell to sixth down the stretch with a time of 30:19. Fellow senior Dylan Morin was 15thin 31:35. The women’s race was a bit more stretched out, but Brunette ran near the front the whole race as well to finish fifth in 36:43.
Friday’s field events start at 4:30 p.m. MT, while running events commence at 5:30 p.m.
