Friday night marks what will be the biggest bout of Green River native “Magic” Mike Hamel’s MMA career so far.

Hamel, who is 7-4 in his MMA career, will fight undefeated Usman Nurmagomedov (11-0), who is the cousin of MMA legend Khabib Nurmagomedov. The fight will be part of a five-fight main card of Bellator 255 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

“It’s the biggest fight of my career,” Hamel said. “I’m fighting a dude with a big name, it’s going to be on Showtime, it’s on the main card, it’s on the Bellator, which is a major organization, and so it’s got all the key factors to be a super big fight.”

With the hype surrounding Nurmagomedov and the bettors placing Hamel as the underdog, he’s confident he’ll come out on top.

“I just want to show what me, my team, and my family already know — that I want to go out there and whoop this dude’s butt. I’m going to win and I’m excited to go show that,” Hamel said.

Hamel and his family are no strangers to winning. His father, Mike Hamel, holds the University of Wyoming’s all-time record for pins.

Although Hamel lives and trains in Phoenix, Arizona, he’s proud to represent the Cowboy State.

“Wyoming doesn’t get enough credit. There’s a ton of good, hard-working, blue-collar people out of that state and I love representing that because that’s how I think I fight too,” Hamel said.

I’m just a workhorse out there and I’m going to outwork people. Representing a state that’s known for their work ethic I think represents me and I represent them. We’re a good combination.

Attending Green River High School growing up, he knew fighting was going to be his profession.

“When I was in high school, I watched wrestlers kind of take over MMA and knew I never wanted to have a normal job,” Hamel said.

Before every fight, Hamel makes sure to throw up a 307 sign with his hands to the camera, which he will do in tonight’s fight.

The main card starts at 7 pm, which can be viewed on Showtime.
