Green River runners opened the cross country season at home; Lady Wolves take first while the Boys finish in second

GREEN RIVER – No matter what sport it is, opening the season at home is always nice. The Green River cross country squads took advantage of this and finished strong to open the 2014 season. The Lady Wolves earned their first team win while the boys finished in second at the Green River Invitational over the weekend.

Green River welcomed Evanston, Rawlins, Lander, Saratoga, Wyoming Indian, Mountain View and Lyman to Stratton-Myers Park to start the 2014 cross country campaign. The Lady Wolves finished on top as a team with a score of 36 while Evanston came in second with a 58. Wyoming Indian rounded out the top three teams on the girl’s side with an 87.

Individually, Hannah Behunin of Mountain View paced the field with a time of 20:01. Green River’s Josie Givens opened the season strong and trailed Behunin by one second to finish second with a 20:02. Clarrisa Barton of Evanston followed in the third spot. Other Lady Wolves finishers included Nicole Davis who came in fourth, Cheyenne McMiceals who raced to an eighth-place finish, Sarah Joyner in ninth and Cassandra Newcomb who finished in 13th.

Boys

On the boy’s side, Evanston paced the field with the Wolves following close behind in second. Lander rounded out the top three at the Invite. Evanston showed why they are one of the favorites for the state title as they finished the tournament with three runners in the top five and five runners in the top ten. Not to be outdone, Green River was also impressive, with four Wolves runners in the top 10.

Individually, Evanston’s Dillon Gilpin paced the field for the win. Gilpin finished approximatley 30 seconds in front of teammate Sam Richens. The Wolves were led by Shawn McGuire who took home fourth-place honors. Wolves runners Autsin Waters finished in eighth, Curtis Westenskow came in ninth and Braden Reichl finished in 10th. Green River’s Brayden Kovich ran to a 16th-place finish.

Up next on the schedule for the Wolves runners is the Rawlins Invite next weekend. This could change as the schedule says it is tentative.
