WEST JORDAN, Utah – The starter pistol sounded on the 2015 Wyoming Track and Field season over the weekend. Green River opened its season across the border in Utah.
The Wolves and Lady Wolves traveled to West Jordan, Utah, on Saturday to compete in the UHSTCA Invitational. The invite featured 38 teams from around the region. As a team, the Wolves finished in 23 while the ladies finished 20th.
Individually, Green River had several strong finishes across the board. On the girl’s side, the Lady Wolves were led by Holly Huber, Josie Givens and Andri Dewey.
The top finish for the Lady Wolves came from Dewey. Running the 400 meters, Dewey posted a time of 1:01.80 to finish in the fifth position. She was three seconds off the top time posted by Olympus High School’s Cassidy Pinnock. Dewey also had a top 20 finish in the 100 meters coming in 16th. She was only a second off the top time in a very competitive event. Sarah Joyner just missed a top 20 in the 100 as she finished in the 23rd position.
After a strong indoor season, Givens returned to finish sixth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:28.28. She also just missed a top 10 finish in the 1600 meters crossing the line in 11th.
Lady Wolves’ Holly Huber had the final top-ten finish for Green River. In the 100-meter hurdles, Huber posted a time of 16.92 which put her in seventh. The top time was posted by Orem’s Paige Young with a 15.68. Huber also finished in 29th in the 300-meter hurdles.
Some of the other top finishes on the ladies side included Sarah Herd who finished in 24th in the 100-meter hurdles and Kasey Turnbull who finished in 29th in the 100-meter hurdles and 32nd in the 300-meter hurdles.
For the Wolves, Tyler Vendetti had the highest finish. In the long jump, Vendetti jumped a distance of 20-08.75 which placed him in fourth overall. Orem’s Tregan Deveraux posted the top distance of 21-02.75. Vendetti also had a top-30 finish in the 100 meters finishing in 28th.
In the 800 meters, Shawn McGuire posted a time of 2:08.90 which put him in 14th overall.
