RIO DE JANEIRO – Former Cowboys golfer David Hearn shot a 2-over 73 at the Olympic Golf Course in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday as golf returned to the Olympics after a 112-year absence. After one round of play competing for his native Canada, Hearn is tied for 42nd in the 60-player field.

Hearn parred the first hole but notched a double-bogey on the par-5 second hole. He bogeyed two more holes on the front nine, finishing the first half of the round with a 4-over 39.

The PGA member rebounded on the back nine, registering birdies on three of his last four holes of the day for a 2-under 34. Hearn’s Canadian teammate, Graham DeLaet, ended the day tied for second place after shooting a 5-under 66 in the first round. Australia’s Marcus Fraser is atop the leaderboard at 8-under after the first round.

Hearn’s group, which includes Finland’s Mikko Ilonen and South Africa’s Jaco van Zyl, is the first to hit the course for the second round on Friday, teeing off at 4:30 a.m. MT. The Olympic golf competition features no cut, so all 60 competitors will play all four scheduled rounds.
