SWEETWATER COUNTY — Much like the rest of the state, Sweetwater County will be impacted by high winds today, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
According to a High Wind Warning alert from the NWS, Sweetwater and South Lincoln counties can expect to see westerly winds between 30-40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph. The warning will remain in effect until around 6 pm today.
“The strongest wind gusts will likely occur along I-80 east of Rock Springs to the Carbon County line around Creston Junction…,” according to the statement.
So far, Farson has clocked the highest wind gust already this morning with a 64 mph wind gust, while the Southwest Wyoming Regional Airport has already seen a wind gust of 59 mph.
Within the last 24 hours, a wind gust of 91 mph was reported in Red Canyon near South Pass. As winds continue to gust across the state, the Wyoming Department of Transportation has already closed sections of Interstate 80 and Interstate 25 to light and high-profile vehicles.
As of 11:40 am, I-80 between Rawlins and Cheyenne and I25 between Cheyenne and Buffalo are closed both directions to light and high-profile vehicles due to gusting winds, and extreme blow over risk conditions.
