ROCK SPRINGS – The Rock Springs Lady Tigers looked good early but had spells of ice-cold shooting as Evanston was able to pull the upset Friday with a five-point win, 45-40.
Behind Selena Cudney and Maggie Justinak, the Lady Tigers jumped up 7-4 to start. Taylor Jenkins added a bucket and Justinak found the range again while the defense did the rest. The Lady Tigers held Evanston to only four, first-quarter points to take the 11-4 lead after one.
Evanston responded in a big way in the second quarter. Rock Springs went ice cold as the Lady Red Devils went on a 15-0 run. A Cudney putback at the two-minute mark ended the run and gave the ladies their first points of the quarter. Ky Buell hit a three late as the Lady Tigers weathered the storm to only trail three at the break, 19-16.
Rock Springs hit a three to open the second half and even the score. Evanston responded with a two pointer as both teams struggled to score in the third. In the quarter, the two teams combined for 15 points and another late three by Buell had it all even at 25 after the third.
Evanston scored first but Cudney responded. The Lady Devils used timely three-point shooting to get a little breathing room. With 5:46 remaining, Evanston jumped up five, 33-28. Justinak and Cudney cut the lead back to three but another Evanston three ended the run and go up eight, 40-32, with two minutes remaining. Sarye Thomas hit two free throws to cut the lead back to six as the clock ticked under two minutes. With 24 seconds, Justinak connected from downtown to pull RSHS within three, 43-40. Evanston was able to hit key free throws late to take the win.
Rock Springs will return to action as they welcome Jackson on Saturday. The Lady Broncs are 0-11 on the season and struggled against the Lady Wolves Friday losing 63-18. The game is scheduled to tip at noon.
