Lady Tigers Hold Off Late Charge by Bison

CHEYENNE – The Rock Springs Lady Tigers put another one in the win column as they held off a strong charging Cheyenne South team on Saturday, 64-58.

After dropping their first game of the season Friday, the Lady Tigers opened strong against the Lady Bison on Saturday. Emily Quigley had a big night for Rock Springs as early points by her and Ky Buell had the Lady Tigers up early. Alyssa Vigil hit from deep and Taylor Jenkin’s defense led to points on the offensive end as Rock Springs took a 20-13 lead after one. Sarye Thomas had five in the first quarter but battled foul trouble.

After not scoring in the first quarter, Maggie Justinak opened up the second. Quigley and Jenkins continued to find openings and Justinak converted a three-point play as the Lady Tigers took a 14 point lead at the break, 38-24.

The second half was a different story as Cheyenne South chipped away at the Rock Springs lead. At one point in the fourth quarter, the Lady Bison actually pulled ahead of the Lady Tigers. The ladies of Rock Springs did not panic and regained the lead. 

With time ticking down the Lady Tigers ended up on the free throw line. This time, it was Quigley’s offensive rebounding that was key as she rebounded a missed free throw to keep possession with the Lady Tigers. The rebound led to free throws by Justinak to give Rock Springs a 59-57 lead with under a minute left. South struggled to get good lucks and the Lady Tigers hit free throws in the final 30 seconds to ice the game.

Justinak finished with 16 points to lead the ladies in the game. She scored all her points in the second and fourth quarters. Quigley finished with 12 points while Thomas ended with 11. Buell had ten in the win while Jenkins finished a solid game with eight points.

The Lady Tigers will return home as they open up conference play. On Friday, Rock Springs will take on Evanston followed by a game with new conference foe Jackson on Saturday.
