LARAMIE – There were not a lot of surprises on the boy’s side at this past weekend’s 4A State Golf Tournament in Laramie, but on the ladies side there were some surprises due to key cases of food poisoning.
On the ladies side, it has been a battle all year at the top between Evanston, Natrona and Laramie. Natrona entered this year’s tournament as one of the favorites again after winning the past two state titles. While Evanston beat them on the course, the real culprit for Natrona was food poisoning as three Fillies came down sick and could not compete. One of the Natrona players stricken was Eryn Ellis who won several tournaments this season and was expected to make a push for the individual title.
Evanston finished in first with a total of 542 which was 40 strokes ahead of Laramie. Cheyenne East shot a 584 for third. The Lady Tigers of Rock Springs had a strong tournament as they finished in fourth place overall while Sheridan came in 591. The Lady Wolves finished in 10th overall.
Although the team struggled with illness, it ultimately was a Natrona golfer who took the individual title. Caitlyn Skavdahl was able to beat defending champion Katie Lunsford of Evanston by one stroke. Bailee Watt of Kelly Walsh, was only four strokes back to finish in third. Mariah Farden of East and KW Reilly Johnson rounded out the top five.
Lady Tiger’s Callie Cox and Lyndsey Koupa paced the team as they both shot a 193 which put them in 10th place overall. Makenzie Kroupa shot a 206 to finished in 22nd while Kaylen Taucher was right behind with a 209 to come in 24th. Shaylee Zampedri finished in 26th with a 219 to round out the Lady Tigers individual scores.
For Green River, the Lady Wolves were paced by Sidney Mandros who shot a 212 to finish tied for 26th with Lady Tiger Zampedri. Kelsee Barton shot a 219 to finished in 35th while Lauren Hoyt rounded out the Lady Wolves in 41st with a 232.
4A Boys
On the boy’s side, Riverton was able to repeat as they took the team title with a score of 602 which was 17 strokes ahead of Laramie and 18 strokes ahead of Central. Rock Springs finished ninth with a 672 while Green River rounded on the team scores in 12th with a 739.
Individually, Easton Paxton of Riverton has been setting the bar all season long. Only a sophomore, Paxton’s win is his second 4A championship. His total was 131 which was 12 strokes better than John Murdock IV of Laramie and Kelly Walsh golfer Drew Petrie who both finished with 143. Central’s Lars Gittings and Eli Bryant of Laramie rounded out the top five.
For the Tigers, Garret Phillips lead the team with a score of 157 as he finished in a tie for 13th place. Tiger Ryan Brandt shot a 166 which put him in a tie for 32nd while Andrew Lee and Darron Hyde finished 41 and 42 respectively with a 174 and 175. Tiger Dillon Hale tied in 54th with a 184.
For the Wolves, Brock Ortega paced the team as he finished tied for 17th with a 160. Kyle Gogilo finished tied for 36th with a 170. Green River’s JD Richardson came in 58th, Patrick Harvey 59th and Kamden Carollo in 60th to round out the Wolves individual performances.
