SWEETWATER COUNTY — The new high school golf season is underway in Wyoming, and both Green River and Rock Springs are set to get their first tournament action this week.

Practice for both programs began Monday, Aug. 10, the first allowable practice date established by the Wyoming High School Activities Association. The first fall contests are scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 12.

For Green River, the season begins Wednesday in Sheridan. The Wolves will get an early opportunity to see where they stand against competition from around the state as they begin working toward the postseason.

Green River will not host a home tournament this season. The team’s closest tournament on its schedule will come Sept. 3-4, when the Wolves travel to Rock Springs for the Rock Springs tournament.

That tournament will give Green River another chance to prepare for the postseason before the 4A regional tournament in Riverton on Sept. 10-11.

Rock Springs will open its season Thursday, Aug. 13, at the Riverton tournament. The Tigers’ calendar confirms the season-opening tournament in Riverton on Thursday.

Rock Springs will then have the home-course advantage when it hosts the tournament Green River will attend Sept. 3-4. The event will serve as an important late-season test for both Sweetwater County programs with regionals approaching the following week.

For both teams, the ultimate goal is a return to the state tournament in Evanston.

The WHSAA has Evanston scheduled to host the 2026 4A state golf championship, with the official state schedule listing the 4A meet for Sept. 18-19.

The postseason format places added importance on the regional tournament. Under WHSAA rules, the 4A qualifying tournament is held the week before state, with the top 20 individual golfers, along with additional qualifiers from the top four teams, advancing to the state tournament.

That makes the next several weeks important for both Green River and Rock Springs. With practice underway and the first tournaments arriving immediately, both teams will have a short window to establish their lineups, gain experience and position themselves for the postseason.

For the Wolves, the opening tournament in Sheridan starts that process Wednesday. For the Tigers, it begins Thursday in Riverton before the teams eventually meet again on Rock Springs’ home course in September.

From there, the road runs through Riverton for regionals and ultimately to Evanston for the 4A state championship.
