Metcalf and Dupape Lead Rock Springs in Lander

ROCK SPRINGS – With some of the top high school wrestling squads in attendance, the Rock Springs Tigers battled to an 11th-place finish in Lander over the weekend. Cameron Metcalf and Ashton Dupape led the way for the Tigers.

Rock Springs has faced several strong opponents throughout the year but one of the toughest has been the injury bug. Despite having several wrestlers out, the Tigers just missed a top ten among several of the top 3A and 4A schools. Star Valley took the top spot while Powell finished second. Glenrock, Laramie and Kemmerer rounded out the top five. The Tigers scored 81.5 points, one point behind Cody who finished in 10th and 15 points behind ninth-place Buffalo.

“I just didn’t feel like we had a great week compared to how we did in Green River,” head coach Brad Profaizer said. “We looked a little sluggish. “The 3A teams that were there are as good as any 4A teams and it’s good to see what kids we’ll be competing against in two weeks at the Ron Thon.”

Several wrestlers were out of the lineup including Trevor Ryan who was injured earlier in the week against Evanston. The good news is the thumb was only dislocated and not broken and Profaizer said they are looking for a full recovery soon. John Nowland, who missed the first part of the season after surgery, also sat out as he continues rehabilitation.

Individually, Cameron Metcalf led the Tigers with a second-place finish at 120. Metcalf moved into the semifinals with shutout wins in his first two matches. In the semifinals, he was able to get by Torrington’s Trey Rodriguez with a 4-3 decision. Metcalf was on the other side of a close 9-4 decision in the finals dropping to Glenrock’s Joe Taylor, who is 25-5 on the season.

Dupape also moved into the semifinals at 126. Laramie’s Idris Elias, who is 32-3 on the season, was able to get the win over Dupape. He responded with a win by pin and in the third-place match, won a close 7-6 decision over Taten Bennett of Douglas.

Also at 126, Cole Seymour battled to a fifth-place finish. He rolled into the quarterfinals where he was defeated by Dupape in a 6-1 decision. He responded with two wins in the consolation rounds to move into the consolation semifinals where he was defeated by Bennett of Douglas. In the fifth-place match, Seymour finished a solid tournament with a 7-2 decision over Glenrock’s Brysen Collier.

With roughly four weeks left in the season, Profaizer they are going to go to work and prepare for the final stretch of the season.

“Hopefully, we get everybody back and healthy soon to re-establish our lineup,” Profaizer concluded.
