ROCK SPRINGS – In Sweetwater County, the mining industry plays an integral part in shaping the economic landscape. One international mining organization seeks to foster local ties at home in Wyoming. The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) Southwest Wyoming section announces a scholarship program for students pursuing Engineering, Geosciences and Geomatics majors at Western Wyoming Community College.

Beginning in the spring semester of 2014, one scholarship for up to $1,500 will be awarded by the local SME chapter to a full time student. This funding is intended to cover in-state tuition, housing, or books. Arash Habibi, the local chapter’s SME chairman said, “Education is a key for success. It offers unlimited tools to solve problems. For that reason, SME values and supports education by offering this scholarship program. We are pleased to honor local students and joined forces with WWCC to make it happen”.

Scholarship applications are available at the WWCC Financial Aid office for students to fill out. The Application needs to be submitted before November 30. The WWCC Financial Aid office will conduct the primary screening process. Students must have a minimum of 2.75 GPA and have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours.
