Mustangs Open Conference Play With Win Over Miles

ROCK SPRINGS – While it may not have been the prettiest game, the Western Wyoming Mustangs opened Region IX North play Thursday with a win over Miles Community College,  68-59.

Western entered their conference opener Thursday winning seven of their last eight including a win over Impact Academy on Jan. 6. The Mustangs started strong but let the Pioneers creep back in late.

The Mustangs attacked the basket early with Earl Russell and Callum Lawson. Josh Fearing followed the inside attack with outside shooting and behind a strong defensive effort had Western up 10 in the first ten minutes of the game, 22-12. The Mustangs maintained the lead at took a double-digit lead into the break, 32-22.

Lawson and David Thornton continued to attack to open up the second half and a three by Dacian Spotted Elk had WWCC up 17 within the first five minutes of the second half. From there, the game slowed down as Western struggled from the field.

The Mustangs only managed 13 points over the next 12 minutes as Miles was able to make it a game late. The Pioneers would get as close as seven as Western struggled from the foul line. Tyrell Issacs was able to guide the team down the stretch and the Mustangs were able to hit important free throws to ice the game, 68-59. Issacs would finish the game with 16.

Western continues conference play at home this Saturday as they welcome Little Big Horn to Rushmore Floor. The game is set to tip at 3 p.m.
