ROCK SPRINGS – The 2015 Mustangs played their final scrimmage for the fall season against the Salt Lake Community College Bruins this past Saturday at Rock Springs Junior High.
Just like their previous two scrimmages, the Mustangs possessed the ball well in the first half and made good on their chances. The first goal for the Mustangs and of the match came off of a free kick from Devin Moore that found Alex Sorenson’s head.
The header was deflected by the keeper and the ball bounced off of the crossbar, it fell to Alex Sorenson who easily scored the opening goal.
The second goal of the match was also from the Mustangs after Kyle Goglio was fouled in the penalty area and Taylor Flitton buried the penalty kick to the bottom right. The score at the half was 2 – 0 in favor of the Mustangs.
After the halftime break and an additional 30 plus minutes lightning delay the second half resumed. Again the Mustangs struggled to maintain their intensity and allowed the opposition to get back in the match and even take the lead. SLCC scored goals in the 63rd, 69th and 74th minute.
SLCC lead of 3 – 2 would hold for most of the second half until the Mustangs scored the equalizer in the 90th minute. The tying goal was scored by Jose Rincon, after Landon Jacobsen assisted. Since it was a scrimmage no overtime was played and the scrimmage ended in a draw.
U of U Match
Thursday night in Salt Lake City the Mustangs played their second scrimmage of the 2015 season against the University of Utah Club team.
Head Coach Jeff Atkinson said this has been a good scrimmage series for the two teams dating back six or seven years. The starters for the Mustangs were determined by the results of their training camp fitness tests. All 24 healthy Mustangs.
The offense started the match strong for the Mustangs scoring in the 13th minute by Alan Wendlandt with the assist going to Landon Jacobsen. The second goal for Western was in the 19th minute as Wendlandt returned the favor finding Jesse Cardenas who finished.
The Mustangs scored their third goal in the 36th minute. A nice assist from Tanner Trumble and a clinical finish by Jose Rincon found the goal. The Utes snuck a great shot under the crossbar in the 37th minute to finish the scoring in the first half. The halftime score was 3 -1 in favor of the Mustangs.
The second half scoring was again started by the Mustang who scored a penalty kick goal in the 54th minute. The goal was scored by Riley Gibson.
The lead with 35 minutes to go was WWCC 4, U of U 1. The Utes would score four unanswered goals in the latter end of the match to steal a win in the scrimmage.
The U of U goals came in the 59th minute, 67th minute, 84th minute and 89th minute. Atkinson said the Mustangs did break down during the end of the scrimmage defensively and were caught on many counter attacking opportunities.
“Hopefully lessons learned for Western as the regular season approaches next week,” Atkinson said.
