CASPER – Reclassification, along with changing the basketball and soccer seasons back to what they used to be, were some of the topics of the first fall 2015 meeting of the Wyoming High School Activities Association Board of Directors.
Basketball Season
The Board defeated motions to return to a 20-game season, and to start practice the week of Thanksgiving. This was the format before the 2014-15 season.
Soccer Season
The board passed on first reading to go back to having the soccer season start and end on the same weekends as track and field. This must undergo another reading to become official, and would take effect in spring 2017. The length of the season would be unchanged.
Reclassification
This is a topic that comes up every 2 years.
The current classification cycle ends in June 2016, and the WHSAA has acquired 2-year average enrollment numbers for all schools for the 2016-17, and 2017-18 school years.
As enrollment numbers go up or down, schools that are close to the cut-off line, could find themselves moving up or down a class.
Numbers are provided by high school principals and apply to the 2016-17, and 2017-18 school years.

Reclassification for football
For football, the top 10 are Class 4A, the next 12 are Class 3A, the next 14 are Class 2A, the next 14 are Class 1A, and all others are 6-man.
A school does have the option to opt up or opt down a class, but if they opt down, the team is ineligible for the playoffs.
Class 4A, 3A are unchanged.
Moorcroft would move up from 1A to 2A, while Wright would move down from 2A to 1A. They would take each other’s place in the East Conference.
Moorcroft put in a request to downgrade to Class 1A and still be eligible for the playoffs, due to many students having religious involvement/activities. The Board defeated the motion. Moorcroft could opt down to 1A, but would be ineligible for the playoffs.
Riverside and Lingle-Ft. Laramie will opt down from 1A to 6-man. The Rebels and Doggers will play a 6-man season, but there will be no post-season during the new reclassification cycle. Both schools came in above the cutoff line, between 1A 11-man and 6-man.
Burlington will play 6-man football in the new reclassification cycle, because the Huskies came in below the cutoff line, between 1A 11-man and 6-man. They will be eligible for the playoffs.
Cokeville will opt up from 6-Man to 1A.
With the opt ups and downs, it appears that 1A 11-man will have 13 teams, unless something changes.
6-Man will have 16 teams (including Lingle-Ft. Laramie and Riverside), with 14 of the 16 eligible for the post-season.
Reclassification for volleyball, basketball, soccer, track and field, cross country, golf, swimming, wrestling
The top 12 make up Class 4A, the next 16 are Class 3A, the next 20 are Class 2A, and the rest are Class 1A.
Jackson will move up from 3A to 4A and will be placed in the west. The 4A East will be unchanged. The Broncs put in a request to stay in 3A, but the Board denied it.
Riverton will drop from 4A to 3A.
Thermopolis and Lyman will move up from 2A to 3A.
Lovell and Glenrock will move down from 3A to 2A.
Upton will move up from 1A to 2A.
Saratoga will move down from 2A to 1A.
Proposed conferences for 3A, 2A, 1A: (NOT OFFICIAL. This is will be determined by coaches and AD’s.)
No word on if 3A will continue with quadrants or go back to just an 8-team East and West Conference
3A NE: Worland, Thermopolis, Buffalo, Newcastle
3A SE: Rawlins, Douglas, Wheatland, Torrington
3A NW: Cody, Powell, Riverton, Lander
3A SW: Star Valley, Pinedale, Mountain View, Lyman
2A NE: Big Horn, Wright, Upton, Sundance, Moorcroft, Tongue River???
2A SE: Glenrock, Lusk, Southeast, Pine Bluffs, Burns
2A NW: Lovell, Rocky Mountain, Greybull, Riverside, Tongue River or Shoshoni???
2A SW: Wind River, Wyoming Indian, Big Piney, Kemmerer, Shoshoni???
In 2A, the issue would be TR. Do they stay in the NE, making a 6-team quadrant? Or move to the NW, which would force Shoshoni to the SW and balance all the quadrants? If TR stays in the NE, Shoshoni could choose whether to play in the NW or SW. Whichever Shoshoni doesn’t chose, that quadrant would be left with 4 teams.
1A NE: Arvada-Clearmont, Hulett, Midwest, Kaycee, Normative Services
1A SE: Glendo, Guernsey-Sunrise, Lingle-Ft. Laramie, Rock River, H.E.M.
1A NW: Meeteetse, Burlington, Ten Sleep, St. Stephens, Dubois
1A SW: Cokeville, Farson-Eden, Little Snake River, Encampment, Saratoga
