Rock Springs to See Slight Water Rate Increase

ROCK SPRINGS — The Joint Powers Water Board (JPWB) announced through a letter to the City of Rock Springs that water rates will be increasing for fiscal year 2023, which starts on July 1, 2022.

The Rock Springs City Council will meet for its regular meeting on Tuesday, April 19, at 7 p.m. at City Hall. During this meeting, the Council will review a letter from the Joint Powers Water Board regarding a water-rate increase.

The letter informing the city of the increase states water-usage charges will be increase by 6 cents per CCF (hundred cubic feet) over last year’s rates.

“To illustrate the increase in the wholesale portion of the final water rate; the average household typically uses 10.1 CCF during low demand periods and 29.4 CCF during high demand,” the letter states. “This 6-cent increase in wholesale rate, will equate to an increased cost of 61 cents and $1.76 per month, respectively.”

According to the letter, the change in water rates is due to an increase in material and supply costs coupled with a decrease in revenue. Some of the expenses have increased by more than 175 percent over last year’s expense, the letter states. The rate increase will start on July 1, 2022.

“The JPWB chose to use a portion of reserve monies to ameliorate the increase that would have otherwise been passed onto the customers,” the letter states.
