SHERIDAN – The Rock Springs Lady Tigers have had a strong second half of the seasonĀ and will look to keep the run going at state starting on Thursday.
The Lady Tigers enter Thursday’s State Championships as the top seed from the West. They open bright and early at 9:30 a.m. against the fourth seed from the east, Cheyenne East. For the past six season, the east has swept the west in the opening round of the tournament.
The Lady Thunderbirds finished the season with an overall record of 9-7-2 but struggled in conference play. Against the rest of their conference, East finished 3-5-2. In the East Regional Tournament, the Lady T-birds opened with a win in the 4 vs. 5 matchup to qualify for state. They upset Sheridan by one, 2-1.
East was beat by top seed Laramie 6-0 in the second round and again tasted loss in the third-place game against second-seed Cheyenne Central, 3-1.
Jessie Erickson scored 10 goals in the regular season to lead the Lady Thunderbirds. Abby Morillon finished with seven while Dani House, Katie Loken and Sydney Miller each added four goals. Morillon also had nine assists on the season.
East has a high-powered offense scoring 50 goals on the year. They have only allowed 25 with goalie Mackenzie Paintner finishing with 50 saves.
Rock Springs finished with a record of 14-6 overall. The ladies won five of their last seven regular-season games and continued the run at the 4A West Regional Tournament.
The Lady Tigers opened the tournament with a strong 3-0 win over Riverton. The followed it avenging losses to Kelly Walsh and Natrona to win the next two and the tournament championship.
During the regular season, Madisyn Cantrell was anĀ offensive keyĀ leading the team with 15 goals. Jasmine Ramirez, Delia Griffin and Otilia Martinez had several key goals throughout the year. Martinez finished with six assists in the regular season with Cantrell and Kia Comstock also among the assist leaders.
Rock Springs scored 35 goals on the season while allowing 31. Zoe Baldwin was among the 4A leaders on defense with 143 saves in the regular season.
