SmartAsset Ranks Sweetwater County Towns in Top Five Most Affordable

When it comes to affordable living in Wyoming, Sweetwater County ranks high on the list according to the SmartAsset index.

SWEETWATER COUNTY — A 2021 study by the SmartAsset website ranks Rock Springs and Green River in the top five most affordable places to live in Wyoming.

The seventh annual study weighed several factors, including taxes, homeowners’ insurance, and home costs relative to the local median income.

Places where homeownership costs were lowest relative to the median income in each location were considered the most affordable.

Rock Springs ranked fourth on the list with an affordability index of 40.2. The median income in Rock Springs is $76,722 with average closing costs of $2,603, annual property tax of $1,388, and an average annual mortgage payment of $8,849.

Green River is ranked fifth with a median income of $75,087, average closing costs of $2,598, annual property tax of $1,401, and an average annual mortgage payment of $8,933. That puts the city’s affordability index at 38.83.

Rawling topped the list on the SmartAsset study with an affordability index of 46.62, followed by Worland (43.44) and Gillette (41.63). Evanston, Douglas, Cheyenne, Torrington, and Riverton round out the top 10.
