Sweetwater County to Vacate Abandoned Vehicle Lot

Sweetwater County to Vacate Abandoned Vehicle Lot

The abandoned vehicle lot is located on the west side of 654 I-80 Service Road, Rock Springs, Wyoming.

SWEETWATER COUNTY — The Sweetwater County Commissioners will approve a request by Auto Recyclers for the County to vacate the abandoned vehicle lot that the company has been renting to the County for several years during their meeting Tuesday morning.

The action is scheduled to take place during the Commissioners’ Tuesday meeting beginning at 8:30 am at the Sweetwater County Courthouse.

The Liggett family, owners and operators of Auto Recyclers, has been helping Sweetwater County with the abandoned vehicle program since 1979. However, John Liggett brought forth persisting issues last year that needed to be resolved in order for Auto Recyclers to continue hosting the County’s abandoned vehicle.

Issues on the lot included cars being stored for years on end, overcrowding, and the costly price of disposing of campers and boats. Liggett told the County Commissioners last year that if solutions were not found, the County would need to find a new lot to store abandoned vehicles.

Liggett sent an email to the County last month that included contract terms for continued use of the lot. If the contract was not signed by February 28, Liggett said they would need to vacate the lot by March 30, 2021.

In the email, Liggett wrote that he had emailed multiple times over the last three months to set up a meeting to discuss contract, operation, maintenance of the abandoned vehicle lot, but had received no response except from one person, and then they stopped responding as well.

“I had hoped to get everything taken care of by the end of December, that way we could have a contract in place for the new year,” Liggett wrote.

The contract Liggett put together for the County can be viewed below:

Randy Wendling, Chairman of the Sweetwater County Commissioners, has drafted a letter in response which provides official notice that they will comply with vacating the lot by March 30.

“Sweetwater County will make payments for services rendered through March 30, 2021 consistent with the long standing arrangements that have been in place,” the letter reads. “As such, this notice to vacate shall also serve as notice of termination of the agreement that existed between you and the county.”

The Commissioners will officially approve this letter during their regular board meeting Tuesday morning.

The public can attend the meeting at the Sweetwater County Courthouse or they can watch the meeting on the Sweetwater County YouTube channel.

The county resident concerns portion of the meeting will take place at about 8:45 a.m., in which the public can express concerns either in person at the meeting, by calling 307-872-3891, or by sending comments ahead of time via email to: publiccomments@sweet.wy.us.

There is limited seating at the county courthouse as to practice social distancing and be consistent with state guidelines.
