ROCK SPRINGS — The Sweetwater County School District No. 1 Board of Trustees will have to go through the process of appointing a new board member for a third time this year.
The board announced Matthew Gardner’s resignation Monday evening during their monthly meeting Monday. Gardner joins Dr. Chad Franks and Anjelica Wood in resigning from the board this year. The two former board members submitted their resignations in June.
“Wish we could vote on Matt’s resignation,” Trustee Josh Sorensen said. “I’d vote no.”
Gardner represented the Farson-Eden area, which will force the board to appoint someone from that area to fulfill the remainder of his term. Gardner was elected in 2024, along with Cole Wright, Seppie, and Franks.
According to Gardner’s letter, dated Sept. 11, he believes it would be a disservice to continue serving because his outside obligations “no longer allow me to afford the time and dedication it deserves.”
Gardner wrote that he is grateful for the experience and perspectives he has gained during his time serving on the board.
“I look forward to continuing to support the amazing students of the district through other means, and I will continue to advocate for the district to be the absolute best it can be.”
Wright said Gardner always provided his own perspectives, complimenting him on the way he has handled the diverse discussion taking place on the board.
The district will accept letters of interest from residents interested in joining the board. Letters must be received by 3 p.m. Oct. 1 at the superintendent’s office.
