GREEN RIVER – After battling to a tie in the first meeting, the Rock Springs Tigers and Green River Wolves left in all on the pitch in the second meeting of the season. In the end, it was an overtime victory for the Tigers as the Sweetwater Cup will reside in Rock Springs until next season.
The two teams entered Tuesday’s game sitting first and second in the 4A West. Rock Springs entered with a 6-0-1 record while Green River came in with a 5-0-2 conference record. Like they did in the first game, both teams played an even first half as they entered the break tied at nil.
In the second half, it was Green River that struck first. A foul in the box gave the Wolves a penalty kick. Tiger keeper Nic Kautzman went one way and Gregory Marchal went the other as the Wolves jumped up 1-0 with just over 24 minutes left in the game.
The two teams traded shots for the next 20 minutes with both keepers keeping the ball out. With time running down for the Tigers, they finally got the shot they were looking for. With five minutes left, Hector Quezada found a streaking Kade Moeller who was able to pull Patrick Marchal out and blast it by him to even the game at one. That is how it finished at the end of regulation.
The two teams battled through the first OT period even that saw a Green River red card. In the second period, the Tigers took advantage. With two minutes elapsed, Kevin Penuelas found a deflected ball in front of the net and was able to put it in. The goal proved to be the game-winner.
Both teams will look to close out the regular season strong as they head to Casper for matchups with Kelly Walsh and Natrona. The Wolves had Natrona on Friday and the Trojans on Saturday while the Tigers face Kelly Walsh on Friday and Natrona the following day.
