Uber Is Coming to Rock Springs

ROCK SPRINGS — Uber is well on its way to offering its services in Rock Springs and around Wyoming.

Yesterday, Uber’s Territory Manager Franz Schreiner and Alex Bauer spoke at a Meet and Greet at the Rock Springs Chamber about Uber’s plans to operate in Rock Springs.

Uber’s presence in our area will offer both new income opportunities and additional options for local transportation.

Uber arranges rides for its customers with a smartphone app, which charges the ride to the customer’s credit card. No physical monetary exchange occurs between the passenger and the driver. Individuals can drive for Uber as long as they are over 21, can pass a criminal background check, and have a relatively new car that can pass an inspection.

Uber’s ridesharing service, legally known as a “transportation network company,” started operations back in 2010 but hasn’t been able to operate in Wyoming until the laws changed. Pending the governor’s signature on House Bill 80, Wyoming operations could begin this weekend.

Airport Manager Devon Brubaker said the language of the original bill was not as friendly to airports. Because of that, airports around the state pushed for changes in the bill to make it more friendly to Wyoming airports. With those changes, HB 80 has passed in both the House and the Senate and is expected to be signed by Governor Matt Mead no later than Friday.

Once the bill is signed, individuals can expect to take advantage of Uber’s services in our area over the weekend. To kick things off, Uber will be offering considerable savings on rides under $20 for a limited time.
