LARAMIE– The Mountain West announced its Spring 2018 Academic All-Mountain West team on Tuesday, with 93 University of Wyoming student-athletes from winter and spring sports receiving recognition for their academic performance during the 2017-18 academic year.
The total is just three shy of the mark set in 2017 with 96 UW student-athletes on the Academic All-MW team.
A league record total of 1,000 student-athletes from the conference earned Spring 2018 Academic All-MW honors. The previous Conference record of 993 spring semester honorees was set during the 2015-16 academic year.
Women’s Swimming and Diving Garnered 27 MW Scholar-Athletes
Women’s swimming and diving garnered the most awards for UW with 27 MW Scholar-Athletes followed by women’s track and field with 20.
The breakdown by sport for the remainder of Wyoming’s 2017-18 MW Scholar-Athletes includes 14 from men’s track and field; nine in women’s basketball; seven in men’s golf, six in women’s golf and women’s tennis and four from men’s basketball.
UW football student-athlete Ben Wisdorf was also an addition to the list after being inadvertently left off in the fall. A sophomore from Cheyenne, Wyo., he carries a 3.46 GPA in finance.
The junior class led the way with 29 honorees. Additionally, there were 27 seniors, 21 sophomores and 16 freshmen who earned the honor this year.
Eligibility for the Honor
To be eligible for the 2018 Spring MW Academic All-Conference honors, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
Spring sports include baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field.
