ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Wyoming senior Ryan Wallen notched a final-round 73 to move into a tie for 22nd place as the Cowboys wrapped up play at the 62nd annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate on Saturday.
Wallen recorded four birdies in the final round on his way to a tournament score of 222 (+6), fighting through unfavorable conditions throughout the weekend at the University of New Mexico’s Championship Course. Wyoming finished 15th as a team with a score of 919 (+55), contributing its best single-round score of the tournament during Saturday’s final.
“Ryan had a really good finish,” Wyoming head coach Joe Jensen said Saturday afternoon. “Really, the top three guys played pretty solid. I expect really good play at CU. It wouldn’t surprise me to have a golfer make a run at the individual title and to have our team be in the hunt,” he said of the upcoming Mark Simpson Colorado Invite.
Arron Lickteig tied for 68th, shooting a final-round 76 (+4) to finish the weekend at 231 (+15). Drew McCullough was just two strokes behind Lickteig, tying for 72nd at 233 (+17). Glenn Workman and Quintin Pope each totaled 241 strokes, tying for 87th in the field.
Wallen was impressive on par-five holes throughout the 54-hole tournament, tying for the tourney lead with a 4.42 stroke average on such holes. He posted Wyoming’s best two rounds of the weekend. Meanwhile, Lickteig tied for second in the field with 37 pars in the tournament’s 54 holes.
San Diego State captured the team title in Albuquerque, while Colorado State’s Blake Cannon finished atop the individual leaderboard with a three-day score of 210 (-6). Wyoming will travel to Boulder, Colo., for the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational on Monday and Tuesday. After the tournament in Boulder, the Cowboys will wrap up fall play at the Paintbrush Intercollegiate in Parker, Colo., on Oct. 10-11.
