Water in Conduit Causes Fiber Freeze for County Building

ROCK SPRINGS — Commissioner John Kolb expressed doubt about the necessity of digging up a portion of Broadway to fix a frozen fiber optic line during the Tuesday meeting of the Board of County Commissioners.

During the recent sub-zero weather, water entered into a conduit that houses a fiber optic line that serves the Sweetwater County Health and Human Services building.

The Joint Powers Telecommunication Board decided to dig up the street to fix the problem. Commissioner Kolb suggested that attaching an electrical welder to the pipe would have thawed out the problem in short order.

Kolb added that the metal shielding of the cable itself could have been energized to melt the ice.

Crews continue to work on the problem today.
