ROCK SPRINGS Western Wyoming Community College will host the 10th annual Run with Sandy – Together For a Cure 5K on May 2.

The event raises awareness of cancer and supports patients and families in the community, with all proceeds going to the Sweetwater Regional Cancer Center. The event is open to runners, walkers and supporters of all experience levels.

“Run with Sandy is about showing up for our community and supporting local patients and families navigating cancer,” Kristine Clark, Western Exercise Science Professor, said. “Everyone who participates carries a reason—whether it’s honoring someone, supporting a loved one, or taking a step toward their own health—and that shared purpose is what makes this day so powerful.”

The event honors the legacy of Sandy Mitchell, a professor of biology at Western for 28 years before passing away from breast cancer in 2017. Mitchell was known for her deep connection with student and her impact continues through this event, which was originally created by students in her honor.

Participants may choose from several options, including a 5K run on the Gateway/Skyline loop, a 5K walk, or three laps around Western’s outdoor track. Registration begins at 8 a.m. in the Western Commons and is by donation. Those who donate a minimum of $25 will receive a commemorative T-shirt while supplies last.

Western encourages walkers to participate in the 8:30 a.m. time slot, with runners starting at the 9 a.m. slot. Participants can pre-register here, to secure a spot and be entered into prize drawings. This year the top three finishers in the 5K run will be awarded with medals.

Community members who are unable to attend in person are encouraged to share photos using #RunWithSandy, or through a donation at westernwyoming.edu/donate
