#WHYoming: Jaedyn Santhuff

Welcome to our series, #WHYoming.

We are highlighting people from around our communities and asking them a few questions. We want to learn a little about them and see why they chose this great state to raise their families, start their businesses, or simply to ask — Why Wyoming?

For this week’s #WHYoming, I had a chance to talk with Jaedyn Santhuff, a 10-year-old Green River native who has taken it upon herself to sew masks for members of the community to help keep them protected during the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic.

Jaedyn has been sewing for two years and she is happy to be able to use her skills for the greater good of the community. She has made over 30 masks so far and continues to sew more. When she isn’t sewing, she is doing her schooling online, baking and doing other hobbies and catching up with friends virtually.

In these challenging times, it’s great to know we have amazing youth like Jaedyn who have found ways to look after their community. Jaedyn is a talented and generous girl, and she reminds us of the incredible people in this community. It’s people like Jaedyn who make me proud to live in Sweetwater County.

Jaedyn, you’ve been sewing masks for the community. How many have you sewn and who have you given them to?

I have sewn at least 40 masks, including the ones when I taught my older sister Ashlyn how to sew. I donated 14 to Smith’s pharmacy and I am currently working on some for the Hospital Pharmacy. I made some with my sewing teacher, Shauna Dockter, before the lock down. I am not sure if you would call this quarantine! My guess would be over 30.

How did you come up with the idea to sew masks for the community?

I started sewing masks when my sewing teacher, Shauna Dockter, invited me to come to help her make some for donation.

How does it feel to have done this great thing for the community?

It makes me feel happy that I can help people.

How long have you been sewing and how did you learn? What other items have you sewn?

I have been sewing for two years now. I learned to sew from my Grandma Julie and then I started taking sewing lessons. I have sewn aprons, doll clothes, pillowcases, bags, and a pencil case. I even played around and sewed a dress for dress up for myself.

Now that you’re doing school online, what does your average day look like?

I get to sleep in while my mom teaches and does her work, then I wake up and meet with my class and do my school work. After, I play around baking and chatting with my friends on kids messenger.

How did you end up in Green River?

My family lives here and I have been here my whole life.

What is something unique about you?

Something unique about me is my height. I am tall like a 12-year-old and I am 10.

What do you appreciate most about our community?

I really appreciate how small our community is, and there are lots of things to do outside.

What are your some of your hobbies?

My hobbies are baking, sewing, camping, swimming, reading, and spending time with my family. I love hanging out with my my cousins Sylie, Olivia and Macey.

If you could give one brief piece of advice, what would it be?

Follow your dreams and never give up.

Where is your favorite place to hang out in Sweetwater County?

I like to hang out at Washington Park and the recreation center.

What would you sing at karaoke night?

Ocean Eyes by Billie Eilish because I really like the song.

What is one of your proudest accomplishments?

My proudest accomplishments would be winning trophies for dance.

Who would you want to play you in a movie about your life?

I do not know. I do not have a particular person that I like.

What do you like about living in Wyoming?

I love the outdoors, open space, and snow. I do not like the heat.
