Wolves Best Braves in Double Overtime, Lady Wolves Drop Close Game

GREEN RIVER– The Green River High School basketball teams hosted the Star Valley Braves Friday, as well as celebrated their senior basketball players.

The boys varsity team beat the Star Valley Braves, 76-67, in an exciting double-overtime contest.

The Lady Wolves fell to the Lady Braves by just one basket, 35-37.

Boys Varsity

The Wolves started the game strong, putting up the first points, and building an 18-11 lead to close out the first quarter. Star Valley worked their way to a one-possession game, forcing the Wolves into a timeout at 25-24 with five minutes left in the half. The Wolves led at the end of the first half, 33-30. The game remained close throughout the second half, and with 20 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Green River led 55-53. The Braves tied the game at 55-55 with 11 seconds left in regulation. With back-to-back steals, the clock ran out, bringing the contest into overtime. The Wolves and the Braves finished out the first overtime period 63-63, leading into a double-overtime. Star Valley brought the score to 67-63 over the Wolves, before the Wolves went on a 13-0 run, taking the 76-67 victory.

Girls Varsity

Coming off of a big win over county-rivals, the Rock Springs Lady Tigers, the Lady Wolves appeared to be physically drained Friday night. The Lady Braves led most of the game, but the Lady Wolves followed close behind. Star Valley led by just five points at the end of the first half, 21-16. The Lady Wolves added nine points to their score in the third quarter, holding the Lady Braves to eight points, making the score 25-29 as they went into the final quarter. With 25 seconds left in the contest, the Lady Wolves were trailing by just two points, 35-37. Green River attempted a last second basket at the buzzer, but to no avail. The Lady Braves secured the close win, 37-35.

The Wolves and Lady Wolves basketball teams will be back in action next week for the regional basketball tournament in Cody. The regional tournament will span from Thursday, February 28 through Saturday, March 2.
