SHERIDAN – A long school year and a long soccer season is coming to an end as teams begin the quest for a state title on Thursday.
For the Green River Wolves, they enter as the 4A West regular season and tournament champions and will be gunning to add more hardware. They open with the fourth seed from the East, Cheyenne Central. The Indians finished the season with an overall record of 6-8-3.
In the 4A East Regional Tournament, Central entered as the fourth seed and qualified for the state tournament with an opening win over Cheyenne East, 4-1. They lost their next two against top-seed Gillette and second-seed Laramie to finish fourth.
Leading the charge for Central is Ross Elliott, who finished the season with a team-high 11 goals. Austin Brandes finished with 37 saves in goal for the Indians.
The Wolves enter the tournament with an overall record of 11-2-5. Four of the five ties came in early tournament play.
The Wolves enter with momentum coming off a 4A West Regional Championship. They came in as the top seed and were challenged by Riverton to open. It would go to a shootout with the Wolves scoring four while only allowing one.
They would have another challenge in the title game against Kelly Walsh. One of the two losses on the season came from the Trojans. Green River would get the win and the championship, 3-2.
On the season offensively, Green River has scored 21 goals. On the defensive side of the ball, the Wolves have been dominant all year. Behind the leadership of goalie Patrick Marchal, Green River has only allowed 11 goals all season.
