CHEYENNE – Most Wyoming American Legion Baseball teams are already looking forward to next year. For three Wyoming teams, the fun is just getting started.
This week marked the start of the Northwest Region Tournaments. Wyoming Legion Baseball AA State Champ, Cheyenne Post 6, along with the AA State runner-up Gillette Roughriders and the A State Champ Cody Cubs are all in competition.
Cheyenne Post 6 has made it to the regional championship game three times with the last appearance in 2006. Post 6 in on the verge of making it four.
Post 6 started play Wednesday and it took extra innings as Cheyenne beat Billings Montana 8-7. Post 6 was down 7-3 heading into the bottom half of the 11 and scored five to win.
On Thursday, Cheyenne handled Kennewick Washington, 23-5. Heading into the fourth inning, one run separated the two teams with Post 6 holding the edge, 2-1. In the top half of the fourth, Cheyenne exploded for 14 runs to take control.
On Friday, Post 6 faces Medford Oregon at 7:30 p.m. Medford beat Bellevue Washington and Gillette in its first two games of the tournament.
For Gillette the had to battle the rain and Chugiak Alaska to open the tournament. The game featured a one hour rain delay in the third. The Roughriders committed seven errors in the game but was able to hold on for the 9-5 win. Meford beat Gillette 8-3 on day two.
The Roughriders have already played on Friday and was able to avoid elimination with an 8-5 win on Boise. Gillette will face the loser of the Medford/Cheyenne game at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The Single A tournament threw the first pitch on Friday in Logan, Utah. The Cody Cubs open the tournament at 4:30 p.m. against Kenai Alaska
In AA, the team that wins the tournament, gets to compete in the Legion World Series, to be played in Shelby, North Carolina. No Wyoming team has ever made it to the Legion World Series. There is no Legion World Series for the Single A teams.
