ROCK SPRINGS – While most government board meetings involve angry residents, fierce debates and making hard decisions, the Rock Springs Parks and Recreation Board was all about giving appreciation to some very deserving people Thursday night.
During outdoor parks business, Board Member Bill Legerski brought a recent event to the table. Legerski spoke about the recent lightning strike at the White Mountain Golf Course. He explained he spoke to several people who were at the golf course that day and was impressed by what these people told him about the actions of the golf course staff that day.
Legerski said everyone told him how the pro shop took control and kept everyone calm. Legerski said the actions of JJ Syvrud saved a life that day as it was Syvrud who started CPR and brought the victim back.
“Those guys out there were phenomenal,” Legerski said. “A lot of people noticed the actions of our employees that day.”
For several years, the Rock Springs Fire Department and other agencies have given presentations on the defibrillators which are placed around the community. The pro shop has one of these defibrillators as well as the Paul J. Wataha Complex and all outdoor pools in the city.
Park and Recreation Director Dave Lansang said the RSFD will be doing one of these presentations at an upcoming Rock Springs Council meeting and understands they will have a special presentation to Syvrud, Aaron Allred and the other members of the staff for their life-saving actions on that day.
Board member Lynne Demshar said the RSFD and first responders also need to be recognized for their quick response as well.

Roller Derby match
The board also spoke about an email they received from the ice arena supervisor Ken Reed. The email praised the recent Roller Derby match and the Bitter Sweet Bombshells. It said the event went as smoothly as any event he has seen. He said when it was over, the Bitter Sweet Bombshells cleaned the arena and put everything back to normal quickly and professionally.
Board Chairman Ron Cheese said reading the email made his day that day. Cheese said while he will never vote yes to having alcohol in the recreation center, he would support the Bitter Sweet Bombshells in every way. The rest of the board agreed the team was professional and is a top-notch organization.
