GREEN RIVER – The Green River tennis teams split at home to open the 2016-2017 season this past weekend. Both teams beat Powell but came up short against Cody.
The Wolves were strong in their opening match against Powell. On the boys side, Green River won four of the five matches including all three doubles. Gregory Marchal and Patrick Marchal set the pace in the top doubles spot with a 6-1, 6-0, win. Cody Lee and Brendan Bloomquist followed without a loss going 6-0, 6-0 while Karsyn Beutel and Josh Graves wrapped up the doubles sweep with a 6-3, 6-3, straight-sets win.
In singles, Jacob Lock took a tough fought win over Powell’s Rhett Pimentel, 7-6 and 6-4. In No. 2 singles, Andrew Halverson lost the first set but bounced back to even the match. In the final set, Powell’s Jesse Brown was able to take a 7-5 win to take the match.
On Saturday, the Wolves returned against Cody who came off a win on Friday over Rock Springs. It would be tight with Cody taking the win, 3-2. The Marchals and Lock continued their hot play as they both took home wins against Cody. Lock defeated Cody’s Zach Ross in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. The Marchals won in straight sets from the No. 2 doubles spots, 6-2, 6-3.
Lady Wolves
On the ladies side, Green River would also open with a win over Powell behind two double wins. Ashlyn Edwards and Kaitlyn Sharp lost the first set but responded with 6-3 wins in the second and third sets to take the match. Audrie Harrison and Kelby Pope took the win from the No. 3 doubles spot. They were able to win in straight sets, 6-2 and 7-5. Anna Ujvary would give the ladies a win from the No. 1 singles spot. She would take down Powell’s Hattie Pimentel in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-2.
The Lady Wolves would run into a tough Cody team on Saturday and would come up short, 4-1. The Green River win would come from Ujvary from the No. 1 singles spot. Cody’s Tessa Blough would win the first set 7-6 but Ujvary would respond with a 6-4 win in the second. Bough would forfeit in the third set giving Ujvary her second win in two days.
The Green River Wolves will be back in action on Thursday as they hit the road for a battle with rival Rock Springs. Matches are scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
