EVANSTON – The Green River Lady Wolves are one win away from state as they opened the 4A West Regional with a three-set win over Jackson, 25-22, 26-24 and 25-22.
The set and match was close from the start. As she has all year, Andri Dewey gave the Lady Wolves a little breathing room with her serving, scoring four straight to give GRHS a 9-4 lead. Katie Banks and Taylor Stoeger controlled the net as Green River was able to maintain the lead. Jackson gained confidence and made a late push pulling within two but Stoeger was able to end the first with a kill, 25-22.
Jackson held a one-point lead for the start of the second set and jumped ahead by as many as three, 11-8. Hanna Hix came alive and pulled the Lady Wolves back to even and eventually up three, 20-17. Jackson again came back and battled off several set points to even the match. Like she did in the first, Stoeger would swing big at the end to give GRHS a two sets lead, 26-24.
The Lady Broncs played more consistent in the third and forced Green River to make errors. They also used a more finesse game at the net to throw the Lady Wolves off. The plan worked as Jackson held a three-point lead for the majority of the third. Green River made a push to pull within one late, 20-19. Late errors by Jackson allowed the Lady Wolves to take the lead and Banks put the nail in the coffin as GRHS advanced, 25-22.
Green River will return to action at 4:30 p.m. as they face the host team Evanston for a spot at state. Jackson and Rock Springs will play for their seasons at 6:30 p.m.
