LARAMIE – The Wyoming tennis team will begin the spring season on Wednesday against the Central Oklahoma Broncos before participating at the Hurricane Invite in Tulsa, Okla. The match on Wednesday is set for 1 p.m. MT while the Cowgirls will face opponents from Denver, Nicholls State, Oral Roberts and Tulsa beginning on Friday.
“The ladies have been training hard the last several days,” head coach Dean Clower said. “I feel we are prepared to start the beginning of the spring season. As a coaching staff, we still have to figure out our singles and doubles line-ups but that will happen with more matches and time. The team is hungry and ready to play so we are excited to see them in action.”
Wyoming competed in four tournaments during the fall and had some solid showings led by sophomores Elisa Koonik and Tessa van Der Ploeg. The duo went 6-2 overall in doubles play while Koonik finished the fall with a 5-1 singles mark. Senior Dorottya Jonas recorded a mark of 3-5 in singles and 3-4 in doubles play.
Three newcomers also saw the court for the Cowgirls in the fall. Milka Genkova and Ana Tkachenko both went 4-2 during the fall while Imogen Clews posted a 4-3 record in singles action.
After this week, the Cowgirls will resume the season on Sat., Jan. 28 against the Idaho Vandals.
