ROCK SPRINGS – Working all angles and using every resource they can, the Rock Springs Police Department has been combating under age drinking for many years. Recently, the department was awarded an Enforcing Underage Drinking Prevention for Success Grant to continue the battle.
The grant provides $18,000 to the RSPD to help with party patrols, compliance checks and other programs to curb underage drinking. RSPD Cmdr. Dwane Pacheco explained it will help continue the cops in shops and party patrols. Party patrols are extra patrol who are specifically looking for underage drinking at events which usually have a high rate of underage drinking. Events like prom, homecoming, the Sweetwater County Fair and High School Graduations are some of these type events.
“If you’re at an event and see a beer stand, you’re probably going to see us there,” Pacheco said.
Another thing the money will help pay for is rebuys on compliance checks. Last week the RSPD finished compliance checks. There were 36 businesses which passed and eight which failed.
Pacheco explained rebuys are when they will revisit the businesses that failed and see if they sell to the minor again. If so, the RSPD provides education and any help they can to make sure the business stops selling to minors.
The grant money must be used between Oct. 1 through September 30. It is a grant which is provided by the Wyoming Association of Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police. The grant was unanimously approved by the Rock Springs governing body.
Appointments
The council unanimously accepted the appointment of Kimberly Taucher to the Rock Springs Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. Taucher will fill the seat of Veronica Donaldson’s unexpired term.
Bid Openings
There were supposed to be bid openings on the Wireless IP Broadband Mesh Coverage Expansion Project on Tuesday, but they had to be pushed back until the next meeting. Mayor Carl Demshar explained that due to the weather early in the week, travel was delayed at the Rock Springs/Sweetwater County Airport which delayed the arrival of the bids on the project.
Catering Permit
The Rock Springs Council also unanimously approved a liquor catering permit for the Steel Workers Christmas Party on Dec. 20 from 3 p.m until midnight at the Sweetwater Events Complex. The catering will be provided by NAG, LLC.
