ROCK SPRINGS — The Rock Springs City Council will review an ordinance this week that changes the age at which tobacco products can be purchased or used from 18 years old to 21 years old.
During their usual meeting this Tuesday, the Council will review and complete the first reading of an ordinance titled “Offenses Concerning Public Morals and Decencies.”
According to this ordinance, the City of Rock Springs has determined it’s necessary to amend the age for the possession, gift, sale, and use of tobacco to be consistent with both federal and state laws recently passed, which raised the age of use from 18 years old to 21.
The ordinance goes on to state, the current ordinance “should be amended to prohibit the sale or gifting to, and the use and possession of, any cigar, cigarettes, cigarette papers, tobacco products, electronic cigarettes or any liquids or other substances designed or intended to be used in electronic cigarettes, whether or not they contain nicotine or are derived from tobacco to anyone under the age of 21.”
If the ordinance passes all three readings, it will make it illegal to sell, gift or use tobacco if someone is less than 21 years old. The ordinance also states this recommendation is being made in the best interests of residents’ health and safety.
Other Business
After pausing and reviewing the request for proposals process for the Bitter Creek Restoration Project, the Council will review a resolution accepting and approving a contract for professional services with William H. Smith and Associates, Inc., in the amount of $303,640 for the project.
The Council will also review a request from Heather Anderson, Warren Anderson, Angie Pecolar, and Kevin Pecolar for permission to use the old fairgrounds on either October 21 or 22, to have a bonfire event for Rock Springs High School students in celebration of homecoming activities.
