WYOMING – U.S. Small Business Administration District Director Amy Lea presented Derek Johnson, President and Co-owner of Cowboy Donuts, Inc. with the SBA 2014 Wyoming Young Entrepreneur of the Year award on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at 8:00 am at Cowboy Donuts, Inc. in Rock Springs.
The Young Entrepreneur of the Year award is presented annually to recognize excellence and innovation within the SBA’s network of young entrepreneurs in Wyoming. Selection criteria includes: evidence of success as measured by sales and profits, increased employment opportunities, development and utilization of innovative business methods and demonstrated entrepreneurial potential for long-term success, all before the age of thirty (30)!
Johnson spent fourteen months testing recipes in order to make his perfect donut. Derek’s perfect donuts garnered Cowboy Donuts international attention when they competed for the best donut on the “Doughnut Showdown” a show sponsored by the Food Network. Derek was nominated by Doran Fluckiger, Regional Director for the Wyoming Small Business Development Center. Derek utilized the services of the Wyoming Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and Market Research Center.
Cowboy Donuts currently employs eleven individuals and continues to experience strong revenue growth. Amy Lea, SBA Wyoming District Director says, “This award honors the accomplishments of young entrepreneurs like Derek.
