LANDER – The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has finished an analysis of DNA collected at the scene of the fatal bear encounter northwest of Dubois. The incident occurred September 4th near Cub Creek in Fremont County. The Game and Fish also completed an extensive investigation at the scene of the incident and surrounding vicinity and has worked closely with the Fremont County Coroner, Sheriff and Search and Rescue.
Dee Dee Hawk, supervisor of the Game and Fish Department’s forensic laboratory said the results show a minimum of four bears were near the scene of attack. “The analysis of DNA samples show there were two male grizzly bears, one female grizzly bear and one male black bear associated with the area during or shortly after the encounter,” Hawk said.
“These results corroborate the on-site investigation and identify multiple bears in the area near the time of the encounter, however no evidence has conclusively identified a particular animal responsible for the fatal encounter,” according to Dan Thompson, Large Carnivore Section Supervisor.
“We will continue to stay active in monitoring bear activities and would again like to express our sincere condolences to the friends and family of the victim,” Thompson said.
None of the individual bears identified genetically had previously been captured or collared. Subsequent to the incident, Game and Fish crews monitored bear activity in the area and collected DNA samples as well as meeting directly with recreationists and hunters in the forest to discuss bear safety and awareness.
The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is committed to conflict resolution and bear awareness throughout the state. A Board of Review will be convened as soon as possible to evaluate the incident and determine the ultimate cause of the encounter. The results of this evaluation will be made available to the public upon completion.
